About the artist
Mison Schreff (born in 1998, South Korea) is a Korean German artist living and working in Berlin. She studied in Germany, South Korea, France, and Japan. She defines her practice as expanded painting, moving between oscillations of abstraction and figuration, craft-based techniques and digital technologies, the body, and the political implications of architecture.
Working across a wide range of media from airbrush, acrylic, and oil painting to weaving, textile dyeing, laser technology, photography, digital modelling, video, installation, dance, and performance—she develops a fluid visual language that continuously expands the boundaries of painting. During her studies at the Villa Arson in Nice, she developed a distinctive airbrush masking technique. Later, at Kyoto Seika University in Japan, she studied the traditional stencil dyeing technique Katazome, which had a lasting influence on her practice. From there, she opened painting towards dance, developing performative works in which body and image intertwine, transforming the static language of painting into a fluid vocabulary of form and movement. Political, cultural, and psychological questions form the thread of her multifaceted practice. At its core are the interrelations of body, space, and identity, as well as the political and social implications of architecture. Between abstraction and figuration, she explores themes of space, power, and identity, as well as perception, memory, and fragmentation, examining how these inscribe themselves into bodily, spatial, and social structures.
Über die Künstlerin
Mison Schreff (*1998, Südkorea) lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Sie ist eine koreanisch-deutsche Künstlerin, die in Deutschland, Südkorea, Frankreich und Japan studiert hat. Ihre künstlerische Praxis begreift sich als erweiterte Malerei und ist tief verwurzelt im Oszillieren zwischen Abstraktion und Figuration sowie in handwerklichen Techniken und digitalen Technologien, dem Körper und in den politischen Implikationen von Architektur. Aus einem breiten Repertoire an Verfahren, das von Airbrush-, Acryl- und Ölmalerei über Weberei und Textilfärberei, Lasertechnologie, Fotografie und digitale Modellierungssoftware bis hin zu Video, Installation, Tanz und Performance reicht, entwickelt sie eine fluide Bildsprache, die kontinuierlich die Grenzen ihres Mediums erweitert. Während ihres Studiums an der Villa Arson in Nizza, Frankreich, entwickelte sie eine charakteristische Airbrush-Maskierungstechnik. Später, während eines einjährigen Aufenthalts an der Kyoto Seika Universität in Japan, erweiterte sie ihre Praxis durch das Studium der traditionellen japanischen Schablonenfärbetechnik Katazome, die ihre künstlerische Praxis nachhaltig prägte. Von dort aus öffnete sie die Malerei zum Tanz hin und entwickelte performative Arbeiten, in denen Körper und Bild ineinandergreifen und sich die Statik der Malerei in eine fließende Formensprache wandelt. Politische, kulturelle und psychologische Fragestellungen bilden den roten Faden ihres vielschichtigen Werks. Im Zentrum ihrer Arbeiten stehen die Wechselwirkungen von Körper, Raum und Identität sowie die politischen und sozialen Implikationen von Architektur. Zwischen Abstraktion und Figuration untersucht sie Themen von Raum, Macht und Identität sowie Wahrnehmung, Erinnerung und Fragmentierung und befragt dabei, wie sich diese in körperliche, räumliche und gesellschaftliche Strukturen einschreiben, sich dort verschieben, überlagern und in ständiger Wechselwirkung neu formen.
